Individual Counseling, Family Counseling, and Couples Counseling – Accepting new clients

We have a unique approach to therapy and counseling called: “Neuro-Counseling.” Neuro-Counseling for individuals and couples is the bridge between brain and behavior.

Individual Therapy, Family Therapy, and Couples Counseling - FAIR CounselingIn the last decade, advances in neuroscience allowed us to better understand how our brains are working. Researchers discovered that the human brain has the ability to change throughout an individual’s life. That process is called “neuroplasticity,” where the brain continues to reorganize itself by forming new neural connections throughout life. It allows the neurons in the brain to compensate for injury and adjust their activity in response to new situations or changes in their environment.

Neuroplasticity can be affected by life experiences, genes, biological agents, and by behavior as well as by thought patterns. Interestingly, exercise and physical activity in general have a major effect on ‘neurotrophic factors’-chemicals that stimulate the growth and recovery of brain cells. Effective counseling not only changes minds but changes brains as well. Counseling can support the building of new neuron connections!

“Life is not what it’s supposed to be. It’s what it is. The way you cope with it is what makes the difference.”
-Virginia Satir

FAIR counselors combine their physiological knowledge of the brain and results of neuropsychological testing with more traditional techniques while practicing neurocounseling. Counselors focus on teaching emotional and physiological self-regulation skills. Mindfulness techniques are also taught to patients where heart rate variability, skin temperature, and diaphragmatic breathing are all used to help patients control their own behaviors. Several studies found this approach to be an effective treatment for a variety of issues, such as depression, anxiety, trauma and stressor-related disorders, ADHD, substance use disorders, and more. Research has also shown that compassion training increased activation in a number of areas including the inferior parietal cortex, dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, and nucleus accumbens, which are brain regions associated with empathy towards others, emotional control, and rewarding emotions. FAIR Counseling provides a unique emphasis on mental health recovery and client’s wellness. The mental health recovery is not only dealing with symptoms of mental illness but preserving the personhood focused on preserving dignity, respect and esteem of the suffering client.

“We get together on the basis of our similarities; we grow on the basis of our differences.”
-Virginia Satir

As neuroscience continues to unlock the mystery of the human brain, your FAIR counselor will utilize the newest research and interventions to help you feel better, make desired changes, and ensure the lasting success of therapy.  Most of our clinicians completed at least level I training in Gottman Method for couples therapy.
