Teen Intensive Outpatient Treatment Center to help people navigate the challenges of Depression, Anxiety, Drug Abuse, AlcoholismTeenage years can be stressful and challenging. You might wonder whether a teen is experiencing just the typical “growing pains” or a real mental health problem. While adolescence is a difficult time for many teens, there is a difference between “typical” and “troubled”. Mental health problems experienced by teens are real, painful, and if left untreated can have serious consequences.

“Parents teach in the toughest school in the world; The School for Making People.“
-Virginia Satir

The adolescent life stage is filled with rapid changes in the brain that result in physical changes, cognitive and emotional maturation, development of sexual interests, and heighten sensitivity to peer relationships. During this time in life, development of a unique personal identity, balanced with interdependence with family and friends, sets a foundation for the next stage in life. Adolescents experience and express a wide range and intensity of emotions. In addition, they learn how to use maturing executive functions of their brain such as decision making, organization, planning and prioritizing, impulse control, emotional regulation, self-monitoring, and working memory under conditions of intense emotional arousal.

Some adolescents struggle to overcome challenges presented during this time in life. They are vulnerable to internalizing their problems, manifesting in feelings of hopelessness and worthlessness or externalizing the problems manifesting as aggression or delinquency.

Families and Adolescents in Recovery, Inc. (FAIR) located in Schaumburg, IL, offers multiple levels of abstinence-based treatment interventions tailored for adolescents, ages 13-18. Our multidisciplinary treatment team is comprised of a physician-family medicine, a neuropsychologist, licensed mental health clinicians and certified substance use disorder counselors.

“Trust only movement. Life happens at the level of events, not of words. Trust movement.”

Adolescents have unique treatment needs. Our clinical interventions focus on teaching self-motivation, personal accountability, integrity, and ability to recognize one’s value and build self-respect.

We are committed to identifying, understanding, and treating the core issues that impact adolescents and their families. These issues range from depression, anxiety, trauma, bi-polar, personality disorders, impulse control, non-suicidal self-injury, substance use disorders, process addictions such as gaming and social media issues.

These issues, if not addressed, interfere with academic success, impact family and social relationships and at times result in inpatient hospitalizations.

Our Joint Commission accredited IOP program consists of 8 to 12 weeks of intensive treatment in the evening hours (Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 6pm-9pm and Saturdays from 9:30am to 12:30pm), followed by weekly Aftercare program (Wednesday 6pm-9pm). The treatment team coordinates services with teens’ individual therapists, psychiatrist, and school staff members to ensure that teens are receiving the best care and are improving their functioning in all life’s domains. Parents are welcome to attend weekly parent and multifamily groups to receive support and psychoeducation on how best to help their teen and improve family relationships.
